Leah Mallon and her fiancé, Jason Leigh moved to East Maitland from Newcastle to enjoy the relaxed lifestyle and lower cost of living.
Among the early purchasers of land at Harvest, the first home buyers are now excitedly watching their dream home come to life.
“The roof is on now and we’re hoping to be in by Christmas,” said Leah.
Leah and Jason originally planned to buy an existing home in the area but after inspecting many homes they became disheartened with the extent of renovations that would be required. That’s when they decided that buying land and building their own home would be a better idea.
“Everyone told us that we were crazy and we shouldn’t build because we’d have so many problems! But so far we haven’t had a single issue with either the purchase of the land or with our builder,” Leah said.
“The whole building process has been smooth. Everyone at Rawson Homes has been amazing. We don’t know what people were talking about!” she said.
From their first visit to the Harvest site, Leah and Jason were impressed.
“We loved the open space, the views and the overall feel of the estate,” said Jason.
“Neighbours won’t be living on top of each other at Harvest and that’s really important to us. The fact that this is going to be a boutique community of only around four hundred homes and not thousands of homes, like some of the other nearby estates, really influenced our decision to purchase land here,” he said.
Leah and Jason purchased a 570m² lot in Stage One, the Harvest Gardens neighbourhood on which they are building a single-storey, four bedroom home.
“Buying land off-the-plan was really good for us. It gave us more time to save and as we hadn’t chosen a builder yet, it gave us plenty of time to do that,” said Leah.
“It was great, we just paid the $5000 deposit and then used the six months until our land was registered to compare builders, choose a home design and ensure we had everything ready to go as soon as the land was registered. A six month wait was no problem for us at all,” she said.
With only a few months to go until they are living together in their dream home, Leah and Jason regularly visit the Sales and Information Centre to catch up with Deb Wright, Harvest’s Sales Consultant and watch the community take shape.
“Deb has been a great help from the beginning. Even now when we go and see her she’s really informative and so friendly,” said Leah.
“We’re looking forward to owning our own patch of land and to going for walks around the community. It’s such a nice environment, the community garden is great – and we love the ducks!” she said.
